Amsterdam National Library

We do not know if you share our passion for libraries and everything they represent, but if you like to tour their bookshelves full of books and stories ... You have to visit the National Library of Amsterdam.

In every city in the world there is a library capable of supplying the eagerness of the most avid readers, also capable of accompanying the first steps of those who start in the wonderful world of reading. We all have a corner in libraries, perhaps that is why we have a passion for them and perhaps also for this reason, among others, for which we are hopelessly attracted to the National Library of Amsterdam. Any library is adorned with the music of the pages, anyone thunders out the silence and, in any library, the act of shouting is mythical.

The National Library of Amsterdam is also one of the newest symbols of modern Amsterdam. From its distribution, through its innumerable options and reaching its characteristic touches of modernity, everything is at the service of the visitor. Although it is true that for many this National Library may not be part of the select group of essentials in Amsterdam, it is one of the places that you will not regret having visited. As an example, we are going to tell you a curiosity: it is said that if we could line up all the things that we can take in the library and take home, the line would be 28 kilometers.

Trust us. Join us. The Amsterdam National Library has just opened its doors...

Amsterdam National Library building

Amsterdam presents us a wonderful National Library under the name Openbare Bibliotheek, and it keeps both books and pleasant surprises. It is the largest Public Library in Europe.

The building was designed and carried out by the German architect Jo Coenem, who tried to go beyond the concept of a library and wanted to offer the city of Amsterdam and its inhabitants a space where the taste for reading and learning was the protagonist from the entrance. The best way to encourage this love of reading was by making its visitors find more reasons to stay there than to leave. To do this, he connected the spaces in a friendly way and made the light of Amsterdam one of its first visitors. For this reason, during the tour of the National Library of Amsterdam you will see that its lighting is beautiful.

The building was designed so that its 28,000 square meters could accommodate much more than books. In this way, spaces designed to offer both cultural and recreational activities appeared.

Another of the aspirations was to achieve a simple, intuitive and organized space to eliminate everything that would distract the visitor from the main objective: books. In this sense, everything is opportunely indicated so that we can know where we are going and what we are going to find.

As an architectural element, although timidly, it should be noted that the facade is built of natural stone and wooden panels.

Interior of the National Library of Amsterdam

As we have commented, the Amsterdam library is much more than a Library. For this reason, we want to talk about its interior, where the books stand out, but also many other details.

The different floors of the National Library are organized by book themes. On the entrance level, you will find magazines and newspapers. Another of the strengths of the visit to the National Library is in the basement, with a floor dedicated to the little ones. You can already imagine the infinite themes of books, music, movies and even video games that we can find in the library.

The second floor is dedicated to literature and comics. In the third are the travel and history books; in the fourth we have music and art; in the fifth there are volumes on health and nature; and in the sixth floor we can find everything related to theater, philosophy and business.

On the different floors there are also authentic corners to enjoy. One of them could be located in the modern armchairs on its fifth floor, where we can not only rest but also admire the wonderful vision of the city. The views over the city of Amsterdam are also part of the visit to the Library. One of the best viewpoints is located on the terrace of the V&D La Place restaurant. Next to it there is also a café, a theater and an exhibition hall complete the tour of the National Library of Amsterdam.

Perhaps with all this information you can already understand better the reason why the Library receives about 7,000 visits a day, a high volume of visitors that would be impossible if it were not for the fact that the National Library of Amstedam is much more than a library…
