Amsterdam Dam Square
Dam Square is the heart of Amsterdam, a meeting place for residents and tourists visiting the Dutch capital.
Dam Square marks the origin of Amsterdam. Here the main events related to the history of the city and the Netherlands have taken place. From the problems that arose with Spain in the 16th century, through the Second World War and the last events in the 80s, with the coronation of Queen Beatriz. In the last 45 years, Dam Square has only breathed tranquility. Its stately buildings and its regular events make Dam Square in Amsterdam one of the best known places in the city. Here are monuments and historical buildings as important as the National Monument and the Royal Palace.
National Monument
In the center of Dam Square is a 22-meter-high obelisk with two heraldic lions in honor of those who died during the Second World War in the Netherlands. The obelisk is made of marble and cream. Authorities meet every May 4 in honor of the fallen.
Royal Palace of Amsterdam
The Royal Palace located in Dam Square is one of the three palaces of the royal family in the city. This is not the official residence of the royal family but is used for certain royal receptions.
The first construction occurred in the middle of the 17th century and underwent a major reform at the time of the French Revolution in 1808 in a neoclassical style.
The interior of the Palace is a sample of luxury and splendor of the Dutch royal family. Neoclassical paintings, marble on the floor, large carvings on the furniture and precious sculptures characterize the Palace.

The Royal Palace is open practically every day of the year and its visit is interesting. There is the option of taking guided tours inside the Royal Palace but you have to book in advance.
Things to do in Dam Square
Dam Square is one of the liveliest in the city. An ideal place to sit and watch people stroll, enjoy a street concert or watch performances by magicians.
Also, if you are in Amsterdam in early May, you can go to Dam Square on the 4th, when the Remembrance of the Dead is celebrated. It is the day that the Dutch pay tribute to the victims of war.
