Itinerary Free Tour Brussels
Throughout the two and a half hours this free walking tour lasts, we'll visit the most important monuments of Brussels historic city centre. Beginning in the majestic Grand Place. The Grand Place is the absolute centre of Brussels. Described by Victor Hugo as "the most beautiful square in the world", it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
With all this in mind, what better place to start our guided tour? Then, we will take a short walk until we reach the hilarious Manneken Pis. This symbol of the city embodies to perfection the rebellious spirit of the people of Brussels. There are many stories surrounding its creation, and one of them says that the model for the sculpture was a boy who urinated on a torch with which the enemy forces intended to burn the city.
We will also visit the Sablon District, one of the most distinguished areas of Brussels. It is known for its art and antiques and is a great spot to find delightful eateries, cafes, shops and art galleries.
Prepare to be impressed, because our next stop is the Palace of Justice, one of the largest stone buildings in the world and when it was completed it was considered the largest building ever built. From up here you can enjoy one of the best views of Brussel's Lower Town. Also in this district, we will discover the Royal Conservatory, a beautiful building which has been in activity since 1813, during the First French Empire.
Then we will stroll towards one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Belgium, Notre Dame du Sablon. As legend has it, the Virgin Mary appeared to a girl from Antwerp, asking her to take the image of St. Hubert to Brussels. The woman took a boat and gave it to the archers' chapel, making it a place of pilgrimage that would in the 15th century become one of the richest churches in Brussels.
We will enjoy walking along to the nearby Place Royal, an elegant square surrounded by neoclassical buildings and with an equestrian statue of Godfrey of Bouillon at its center. Perhaps not as impressive as the Grand Place, this is still a very important square, with the Palace of Justice on one side, the Church of Saint Jacques sur Coudenberg on the other and a couple of minutes away from the Park of Brussels.
The Royal Palace, or ‘Palais Royal’, the old residence of the Belgian monarchs, stands proudly as the most important building in the upper area of Brussels. Our guides will tell us all about the 19th century royal home and show us how to tell if the royal family is in the building!
Are you looking for a good viewpoint of the city? We will make a scheduled stop at the Mont des Arts to take a few pictures of the panoramic views of the Old City of Brussels and the Town Hall’s beautiful spire.
The Brussels Cathedral is not just dedicated to one saint, but two: it’s official name is the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. Of course, we couldn’t miss this marvelously preserved Gothic monument during our Free Tour of Brussels. We really recommend visiting this incredible cathedral to enjoy its lovely Baroque pulpit and its stained glass windows, especially since the entry is free of charge.
