Itinerary
The two-hour tour begins in front of "Es Foner". It is a popular bronze sculpture made by Llorenç Rosselló in 1868. The sculpture has influences from Rodin and was designed in honor of the slingers who in the ancient age formed their own army.
The next stop is... an arch! But not just any one. We are in front of the Atarazanas’s Arch. In the past this area was the private port of the Muslim governor. Today you can see an inland lake that is below the Royal Palace of l’Almudaina, also known as Royal Palace. It was was built after the Muslim conquest, in the 10th century. The building that we see today is not the original since it has undergone many transformations, especially after the Christian conquest in the 13th century. Until the 20th century the Palace was the residence of governors, kings, etc. Today, it is a museum of furniture and tapestries.
The next destination during the free tour with Buendía Tours is the Cathedral of Santa María de Mallorca, popularly known by Mallorcans as La Seu. The cathedral was built over the mosque after the Christian conquest in the 13th century. Its construction ended in 1601 although it has been restored on several occasions. In fact, the Catalan architect Gaudí participated in a modification in 1904 and, more recently, Miquel Barceló in 2007. Here we will also discover the best viewpoint of the cathedral.
The most famous courtyards in Spain are usually those in Andalusia. However, Mallorca is also considered "the city of patios" although many do not know it. The courtyards are usually part of old stately homes that demonstrated the power and social status of those who lived in them. Many of these constructions have been converted into institutional buildings and museums although some are still houses.
Our guide will also show you one of the most famous squares in the city: Plaza de Santa Eulàlia and the City Hall. A part also emblematic that we will know will be the old neighborhood of the Jewish community, known as Call.
The final stretch of the free tour stops at Plaza Mayor, the nerve center of the city and the Mercat de l'Olivar, which was opened in 1958, is the largest market in the city and has food stalls, florists, bars, etc.
Our guide will put an end to the Free tour Emblematic Palma at Plaza España, next to the figure of James I The Conqueror. Most of the city's urban buses stop at this plaza.
