Amsterdam is known as "the Venice of the North", and there is no wonder why. More than 100 km of canals divides the city into small islands connected by more than 1,500 beautiful bridges. The canals in the historic centre of Amsterdam were officially recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2010.
The most famous canals are the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht. This cruise will take you through the unique Canal District, where you will be able to admire the elegant merchant houses that were established here in the Dutch Golden Age, the majestic facades, beautiful churches, the iconic "Magere Brug" (Skinny Bridge) and many more fascinating places. With multiple departures throughout the day and an English-speaking audio guide (there are twenty languages available), you will be all set to enjoy one of the craziest cities in Europe!
The city in itself is one big monument with its special charm, there is nothing quite like it. What better way to discover it than from its ever-present canals?
Any boat trip in Amsterdam is incomplete without cruising along the Amstel river that crosses it and gives the city its name. We will also see the Magere Brug, or Skinny Bridge, which joins both banks of the Amstel river, is one of the most important bridges in Amsterdam. It is a double bascule bridge with a design inspired by 17th century Dutch architecture and isn’t as narrow as we may imagine. It was built in 1934 on the same spot as its predecessor, a bridge so narrow that it’s said pedestrians had to cross it one by one.
The World Heritage-listed 17th century canals, or grachten as they are called in Dutch, will be our hosts on this adventure. We will be able to relax and enjoy the quaint streets of Amsterdam, with their beautiful buildings and houseboats, from the water. As beautiful frames for the canals, the impressive merchant houses stand proud and mighty, demonstrating the wealth that made Amsterdam flourish during the 17th century. We will learn all about the history of these beautiful canal houses and the merchants who lived in them on our boat cruise.
We will also be able to relish the beauty of the most famous of the waterways that form the canal belt: Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht canals. They are the most grandiose and fashionable canals in Amsterdam and a true delight to glide through by boat.
Amsterdam has a great amount of magnificent medieval buildings we will discover on this boat cruise, and among them are its many Gothic churches. At the heart of the city center and the Red-Light District, stands the Oude Kerk (Old Church). Built in 1306, it is the oldest building in Amsterdam. We will also be able to see the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Dam Square, the Basilica of St. Nicholas and many other amazing churches scattered along the canal belt.
These Canals Boat Cruise is a great activity to have the most authentic Amsterdam experience. Of course, we have many more plans for you to get the most out of your stay in Amsterdam.
*Please note: every cruise can be different depending on the traffic on the canals. So you may not see all the sights mentioned in the description.
