Giant Lange Wapper in front of Castle Steen
Antwerp greatly benefited from its strategic geographical location next to the river Scheldat in the 17th century, quickly growing to become an important port, and still remains one, specially as a connection between Central Europe and the Nordic countries.
However, Antwerp's worldwide fame comes from its status as the global diamond capital, polishing and selling vast amounts of the world's most precious mineral.
Our tour starts in the heart of the city, in the Grote Markt or Market Square. In the middle of this wonderful square, we find the statue of the famous Silvio Bravo (who, according to the legend, founded the city) that will serve as a meeting point for our visit.
There is no better way to truly discover a city than getting to know its locals, such as the legendary giant Lange Wapper. This mythical character was an Antwerp inhabitant who, allegedly, used to frighten and chase small children and drunk men in the early hours of the morning, and today has a statue in front of Steen Castle.
We also visit the Church of St. Charles Borromeo, which the famous Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens decorated by painting the facade and the crowning of the towers. Another must-see is Rubens' house, who, despite been born in Germany, lived in Antwerp with his parents for some time.
Next, you will learn about the Plantin-Moretus family, well known in the city due to the pioneering printing workshop they ran in the past. Nowadays the old factory is a museum home to thousands of books and a large art collection, which has earned it the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Vlaeykensgang is another surprising visit, as this secret alleyway is not only picturesque but also hides many interesting stories... Get your cameras ready!
We finish our tour by visiting the Cathedral of Our Lady, a 123-metre-tall architectonic jewel home to other important art pieces by the aforementioned Paul Peter Rubens.
Come and enjoy this tour full of secrets, art, history and legends. Antwerp is an unforgettable city, and with Buendía Tours it is guaranteed to be a highlight of your time in Belgium!
