Itinerary
From Valencia, once on board the bus, we will head to Peñíscola to start the day with a walking tour guided by an expert. After an hour and a half's journey, we will get off the bus and start our tour of the city. We'll start at the foot of the castle walls, in the Plaza de Bous, where we'll look out over the Mediterranean.
We will continue to Santa Maria square, in the heart of the old town, a small but historic and charming square. Its charm lies in its tranquillity and its typical architecture, with white houses and cobbled streets that take us back in time.
Next, we will approach the Porta de San Pere, one of the entrances to the walled enclosure of the city, from where we will see the fishing port. Until it was built in 1925, the arch provided direct access from the sea, which reached the city walls.
We will visit the Bufador, an impressive natural cave formed by the erosion of the sea, from where the water seeps in and produces a unique sound when the waves hit the rocks.
The next stop is the famous Casa de las Conchas, one of the most photographed places in the town, which we will discover before finishing at the imposing Castillo del Papa Luna, a medieval fortress that served as a refuge for Pope Benedict XIII.
You'll have free time to explore its walls, rooms and courtyards, as well as enjoy the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean from the top of its towers. Afterwards, you can have lunch on your own and sample the gastronomy of Peñíscola, with typical dishes such as suquet de pescado (fish stew) or arroz a banda (rice dish).
In the afternoon, you'll enter the Albufera Nature Reserve, where you'll enjoy a boat trip among the rice fields and a variety of bird species, such as flamingos and herons. Afterwards, you will have free time to continue exploring this unique environment.
You'll also learn more about local traditions, such as the cultivation of rice, which is the origin of Valencian paella.
