This tour is much more than just a walk through the catacombs. Throughout the visit we will take you to some of the most spectacular locations in Rome, while explaining their history in detail.
From Via di San Teodoro, where our tour starts, we get a different view of the iconic Roman Forum, one of the city's most beautiful landmarks (if you want to learn more about its history check out our Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill Tour), as well as of the Baths of Caracalla and the Circus Maximus as we advance towards the Catacombs.
During our tour we will discover:
- The panoramic view of the Roman Forum from Via di San Teodoro
- The Circus Maximus, Rome's largest public stadium built for horse-racing
- The Appian Way, arguably the best preserved Roman road in the world, that dates all the way back to 312 b.C. and has a unique charm about it
- The Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica of Rome, a Papal Temple of huge historical value and one of the four mayor basilicas of the city, that is also extremely well-preserved. Here you'll learn about its origin and significance
- The Scala Santa, an iconic set of stairs that some believe to have been walked upon by Jesus himself on his way to trial
- Saint John Lateran Basilica, an imposing and gigantic temple and one of the city's most recognisable buildings, it serves as home to the aforementioned Scala Santa
- The Catacombs of Rome, undoubtedly one of the most intriguing parts of this tour and of Rome in general. An expert guide will explain the history of St. Calixto's Catacombs and that of St. Sebastian's Catacombs, originally used as underground graveyards to avoid old regulations that banned burials inside the city. The history of these tunnels is essential if one is to fully understand the stories and myths surrounding the Italian capital, and also makes for a very entertaining and exciting visit
