São Miguel Contrasts tour with visit to the Lagoa das Furnas Fumaroles

During this excursion, you’ll discover the most spectacular landscapes of São Miguel, the greenest jewel of the Azores Islands.

We’ll begin our journey in Ponta Delgada, heading towards Sete Cidades, where we’ll stop at the iconic Miradouro da Vista do Rei and take in the stunning views of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, with its magical contrast between the blue and green lakes. This spot offers the perfect start to an unforgettable day in one of the most breathtaking natural settings in the world.

After this deep dive into volcanic nature, you’ll discover one of its most unique treasures: the Gorreana Tea Factory, also known as Chá Gorreana. In this historic location, you’ll learn about the artisanal production of the only tea grown in Europe and enjoy a tasting overlooking the green plantation-covered hills.

Next, the tour takes us to Lagoa das Furnas, a geothermal site where you’ll witness bubbling fumaroles — emissions of volcanic gases — and feel the power of the volcano beneath your feet. You can choose to relax in the hot springs or explore the wonderful Terra Nostra Botanical Garden, part of the famous Parque Terra Nostra. Here, you’ll also have the chance to taste the traditional Cozido das Furnas, cooked underground using natural heat.

Then, in Vila Franca do Campo, you’ll discover the history of the island’s first capital and try its famous queijadas. We’ll also have free time to visit the Islet of Vila Franca, also known as Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo – a volcanic crater perfect for swimming or relaxing. To finish the day, we’ll head to the viewpoint overlooking the spectacular Lagoa do Fogo, one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the Azores.
