About Free tour Historic Munich Intro

With this pleasent walk throught the historical center of Munich we will time travel, from the medieval era to now, going through the most important historical moments such us the Nazi movement or the beer culture.

Itinerary Itinerary

Our guided tour of Munich begins at Marienplatz, where we will already find many points of interest such as the new Munich City Hall, but also very symbolic elements for the city such as the Mary’s Column, the fish fountain or the carillon. The Munich carillon takes much of the spotlight among tourists, which is not surprising because it is one of the largest in Europe. Every day at 11, 12 and 17h, the carillon figures dance to the rhythm of the “Cooper's Dance”.

From this zero zone of the city we will continue our visit to the essential places of the old town of Munich. Less than 300 meters away we will make our first stop: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Munich (Frauenkirche). This Gothic building is, in addition to the most visited in Munich, also the largest in the city and one of the most important in Europe.  It's time to get to know the Fünf Höfe Commercial Galleries, a group of buildings with five courtyards, gardens, offices, covered passages and, of course, shops. It is a work of the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron.

Also, in the centre of Munich we find the Odeonsplatz, with a very characteristic majesty since it was designed as a triumphal entry space to the German city. From this point the guide will tell you about the Feldherrnhalle in Munich, a lodge that King Louis I had built in honor of the Bavarian army. Nearby we will see the Theatin Church of St. Cajetan (Theatinerkirche), unmistakable due to its Rococo style facade in yellow, undoubtedly a symbol in the city.

Next, we will know one of the most curious points for most tourists, the Viscardigasse alley, well known popularly because it was the place chosen by those who opposed Hitler's regime to avoid the Nazi salute, obligatory in front of the banner with the golden eagle that the dictator placed in the Feldherrnhalle, the headquarters building for military operations during the Nazi era.

Nearby is the Residenz. As its name suggests, between 1385 and 1918 it was the official residence of the Bavarian monarchs. It is considered the largest urban palace in Germany. As a curious fact, it should be noted that inside it houses 130 rooms and 10 patios. The next stop on the free tour through the historic centre of Munich will be at the Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper). With more than 350 years of history, it is one of the most important operas in the world and each year it welcomes around 450 performances and 600,000 visitors.

We are heading towards the final stretch of the free tour through the historic centre of Munich, strolling along Maximilianstrasse, one of the four main avenues of the city. In this street, we will find buildings and elements from different periods with a style characterized by the combination of Gothic and Renaissance elements. To conclude, from Buendía Tours we will say goodbye to this guided tour of Munich at the Hofbräuhaus brewery, the most famous in Munich and also known throughout the world. With a beer in hand, we recommend you enjoy its history and a unique atmosphere.
