Discover the symbolic surroundings of the Guggenheim museum on our free tour
They say all roads lead to Rome, but in Bilbao every road leads to the Guggenheim Museum, the most important museum in the region and a stunning building designed by architect Frank Gehry in 1997.
Our guides will be waiting for you next to the Puppy sculpture in front of the Guggenheim Museum, before taking you on a tour of the surrounding Abandoibarra area, where you'll discover the history and significance of the museum's construction.
The Guggenheim is one of the most important contemporary art museums in the whole of Spain, so our guides will talk about the art pieces exhibited inside so that you can decide whether or not you're interested in visiting the museum during your stay in Bilbao.
Throughout the tour our guides will answer your questions about why the Guggenheim was built in Bilbao, what its unusual shape represents or what the architect intended with his design, and will share other many interesting facts about the museum.
Our tour starts in the main square in front of the building, home to the most beloved character in Bilbao: Puppy, a giant sculpture of a dog, made with real flowers and designed by renowned artist Jeff Koons. It was originally only meant to be displayed for a short period of time, but the locals loved it so much it ended up staying here permanently!
Next, we cross the iconic Puente de la Salve, a bridge from where you'll be able to see Our Lady of Begoña, a religious image believed to protect men at sea, just like every sailor would have been when they arrived at Bilbao.
This Free Tour Guggenheim 360º is the best way of discovering Guggenheim Museum, a unique building with an original design, and Bilbao's most ambitious project to date, and also of learning more about the Basque city and deciding if you want to visit any of its art exhibitions.
