Frederick William I of Prussia chose Potsdam as his residence for the hunting season in the XVII century, and over the following century, Frederick II The Great would embellish the town with palaces and gardens where the Royal Family and other aristocratic families could stay. Today, Potsdam boasts an incredible collection of luxurious houses all concentrated in a very small town.
Our guided tour of Potsdam begins by visiting the Sanssouci Palace and Gardens, where you'll enjoy a pleasant walk while you learn about the architecture, history and significance of the construction and the kings that lived in it. We discover the Church of Peace, and we cross the Brandenburg Gate (no, not the one in Berlin) that serves as access to the city centre. Here we visit the Dutch Quarter, the Soviet Cemetery and Nauen Gate.
Our tour then takes us to discover another of the city's great palaces, Cecilienhof Palace, where you'll learn about the role this town played during World War II, and why Stalin, Churchill and Truman chose it to celebrate the famous Potsdam Conference that resulted in Germany being divided.
Last but not least, we follow river Haavel all the way back to Berlin, crossing the Glienicke Bridge where CIA and KGB would swap prisoner spies during the Cold War on our journey.
Here's a complete list of everything you'll visit in Potsdam: Sanssouci Palace and Gardens, Frederick The Great's Grave, Church of Peace, Brandenburg Gate, St. Peters and St. Paul's Church, Soviet Cemetery, Dutch Quarter, New Townhall, Cecilienhof Palace, New Garden, Glienicke Bridge.
