You will also save a lot of money: the journey is cheaper than on public transportation, and you will be guided by a professional English-speaking guide. Take advantage of Amsterdam’s position on the map and make a short visit to Belgium from The Netherlands!
We will be departing at 08:00 am from the centre of Amsterdam, to start our journey to the jewel of Flanders, Bruges. The guided tour around Bruges will start at around 11:30h, when we will be able to enjoy one of the most fascinating medieval cities in Europe with an English-speaking guide, and discover why the entire historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the end of the visit you will have four hours of free time to grab a bite to eat and explore the city of Bruges at your leisure, visit its prestigious chocolate shops and stroll along its famous canals.
We will visit the Lake of Love, or Minnewater, one of the most romantic places in Bruges, with a unique and tragic love story hidden inside it. A very peaceful place, it will be a great spot to learn about the history and mysteries of the city. The legend says that if you walk over the Lover’s Bridge and kiss your loved one, it will become eternal love. One of Bruges most representative places and another stop in our tour, the Beguinage is also known as “Monastery of the Vineyard”. Here we will hear about the emancipated women who came to live a pious life in peace and tranquillity. This place was declared a World Heritage Site in 1998, and it's easy to see why.
Next, we will head towards the Walplein Square, perfect to discover the medieval side of the city. A small cobbled square that has been here since the 12th century, it is surrounded by cosy cafes and cute shops. Starting at one of its corners we will find one of the narrowest streets in Bruges, Stoofstraat, a great place to buy souvenirs to bring back home.
We will discover the Sint-Janshospitaal, one of the oldest hospital buildings in Europe. Built in the 12th century, it now holds invaluable art work as a testament of its centuries of history looking after the weak. Opposite the hospital stands the beautiful Church of Our Lady. This church is definitely full of history and marvellous works of art, with the impressive Michelangelo’s marble 'Madonna and Child' as its protagonist.
Our guide will also take us to the Gruuthusemuseum. This palace belonged to the Grunthense family, one of the most powerful families in Bruges. Nowadays it has been converted into a Museum that holds artwork and artefacts that span five centuries of history. Don’t miss the view of the charming St Bonifacius Bridge: it dates from the early 20th century and is one of Bruges’ newest bridges, even though it may not look like it at first. Rozenhoedkaai is one of the most stunning places in Bruges and for this reason it is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Take your own photos as a memory of your trip. It is an ideal location to stop for a moment and enjoy one of Bruges most timeless sceneries.
During this tour we will be visiting Huidenvettersplein, a tiny square that is surrounded by restaurants and is always full of artists gazing around, giving the square an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. Of course, our guide will take us to Burg Square, where the town of Bruges was firstly born and where we will find the Town Hall of Bruges. Nearby stands the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a Romanesque lower church connected to the neo-Gothic upper church where the Holy Blood is preserved. A legend says that a part of the Holy Blood was brought here from the Holy Land by Thierry of Alsace.
Next, we will stop at Bruges main market square, the Grote Markt, and the Bell Tower. At this square you will find some of the most important buildings of the city and enjoy the incredible atmosphere. Last but not least, we will enjoy the sight of the Belfort tower, another symbol of Bruges and another world heritage site! The tower dates back to the 13th century and is characterized by a stunning view over the city and its surroundings.
