Netherlands' capital is unique in many ways. In the year 2000, a new Red-Light District was born in the heart of the historic city center, a district where sex work would be completely legal. This area is also home to many historic monuments, as it's the oldest in the city. We want to explain the history of the Red-Light District to you, as well as to answer common questions about its current situation and future.
Throughout the two-hour walk, an expert guide will tell you everything you need to know about a district that was built during the first half of the XIV century and has since then evolved to become something very different. You'll learn about how it looked hundreds of years ago, how it's changed and why all of its lights are red. As well as the famous lights and displays, this VIP tour will take you to the lesser know places that tourists often don't see.
As a small group of people, we can walk down the narrowest and most charismatic roads of the Red-Light District. Here we find the oldest medieval church in town, now surrounded by red lights and cabins, and a stunning medieval gate that serves as an entrance to the area. All of this whilst learning about the peculiar rules and traditions of the district, as well as about the stigma that comes with sex work or even about how the police treat prostitution in the Netherlands.
A Plenty of art pieces are hidden in little squares and alleyways, mostly erotic in nature. Here we find the world's only sculpture that honours sex work. Last but not least, we can't forget about the magical, and mafia related, coffeeshops and hallucinogenic truffles. Hundreds of these coffees allow their clients to smoke marijuana, hashish and other substances, another controversial topic about which you probably want to know more. Our guides will inform you about what is or isn't legal, why the law is different here and the potential health consequences. Another extremely unique experience.
