Discover the most alternative Amsterdam with our local guides
The Netherlands' capital has much more to offer than just bikes, coffeeshops and red-light districts.
Our tour begins in the famous Dam Square, birthplace of the city and silent witness to many of the major events in the nation's history. As we head towards Amsterdam's more contemporary, underground and culturally active areas, we walk past many imposing historic monuments, like the Royal Palace, the New Church and the National Monument.
Our route will take you to the Anne Frank House, is an extremely popular museum in Amsterdam. The diary of Anne Frank was translated in about 80 languages, making it the most translated book of the Netherlands.
We will visit the Jordaan District, the Amsterdam's chic neighbourhood, where many wish to live but very few can actually afford to. Originally a residential district for working class people in the XVII century, it's a very multicultural and diverse area, due to the number of French, Spanish and English immigrants who moved here looking for more religious and political freedom. Discover the origin of its strange name, why the streets are named after flowers and plants, and much more...
Out of all the churches and religious buildings of Amsterdam, Westerkerk takes the price for being the largest, as well as the most important, protestant temple of the city. Its tower and belfry are for many a symbol of the Dutch capital. The Nine Streets, Picturesque and surrounded by canals, this area is full of designer boutiques, traditional shops, art galleries, hidden cafés and many more surprises. As well as connecting the Museumplein to the city centre, these streets are some of the most beautiful and photogenic in the country.
This Alternative Free Tour ends in the famous Museumplein, where you can find the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the original location for the now removed IAMSTERDAM letters. A square full of art and culture where tourists and locals seamlessly mix.
